What to Keep in a Reptile First Aid Kit

All reptile keepers should be prepared for emergencies. Whilst equipment will vary based on the species and diagnosis, some basic items should be kept in a first aid kit.

Contents of a first aid kit will vary slightly depending on the range of species kept and any pre-existing conditions. However, some basic supplies should be kept in every first aid kit. Including:

  • Contact number for veterinary practice and any transportation services needed.
  • Records for each animal: any medical records as well as husbandry information including duration of ownership, presumed sex and age, reproductive history, quarantine history, feeding regimes and any supplementation used, temperature and humidity records (day and night), and general set-up information.
  • Sterile non-stick gauze pads.
  • Adhesive tape (cloth and waterproof).
  • Sterile saline flush.
  • Cotton buds.
  • Water-based lubricant.
  • Tweezers.
  • Digital thermometer.
  • Scissors.
  • Nail clippers.
  • Tweezers.
  • Cotton wool.
  • Styptic powder/pen.

Contents of a reptile first aid kit should be checked regularly and expired or faulty items and medication should be removed. First aid kits are best kept in a cool, dry place with easy access in case of emergencies.

Remember, if you are letting a friend or family member care for your animals in your absence, to give them clear instructions on where to find the first aid pack if they need it.
